The Graded Chinese Reader 1000 words contains abridged versions of short stories and abridged novellas by contemporary Chinese writers that reflect everyday life in China. The texts consist of a reduced vocabulary of a total of 1000 different Chinese words, which are mainly based on the simplest vocabulary of the HSK. The concise sentences nevertheless consist of a complete structure, frequently used words appear in large numbers. Pinyin appears parallel to the entire text, but if you feel ready to read the text only in characters, you can completely cover the Hanyu Pinyin transcription of an entire page with the enclosed Pinyin Invisible Card.

New words are listed alongside the stories with English translation and some entries also with additional examples of use. An introduction to the background of each short story and an introduction to the author are both given in English, and there are also several questions at the end of the texts in simplified Chinese. With illustrations for each story, with online audio download from the publisher to listen to the short stories (link given on your invoice).

A lost account book brings about an interesting story.

6. 故乡的雨 (Guxiang de yu) (Originally written by Cheng Shuzhen, 原著程树榛).
An overseas Chinese invests in the construction of his hometown in China.
